Over the past several months, I’m confident you’ve encountered the widespread discussion surrounding AI. Perhaps it was sparked when you came across a TikTok video where someone used AI to compose their academic paper—a concept I personally oppose. Another context in which you might have encountered conversations about AI is in relation to the ongoing labor strikes involving the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
While I support the use of AI for BRAINSTORMING purposes. I worry that as AI gets better it will be used to reduce the need for jobs. It will also cause issues for academic integrity as students will find ways around AI detectors to write their essays. Currently, AI is unable to do citations which is an important aspect of paper writing in academic settings. Although I’ve often wished that I could effortlessly complete my college essays with just a click, I am convinced that this approach will ultimately disadvantage students in the long term. When a student uses AI to write their assignments, they fail to demonstrate their knowledge, and the resulting work doesn’t accurately showcase their comprehension or writing abilities.
When ChatGPT first began to blow up I wanted to see its capabilities. I would give it different prompts ranging from an academic essay to a creative writing piece. What I noticed is that creativity was severely lacking. One thing that majorly stuck out to me was how bland and plain feeling the story was. This included the characters to the overall way the story was be told. People want compelling stories that draw them in and keep their eyes locked on the screen or pages.
I truly believe that AI should be used for brainstorming to help generate ideas. People could build off these ideas making them their own and compelling to read or watch. When it comes to AI in the academic setting it should be learning how AI works BUT NOT for doing school work.
