SPOILERS AHEAD for Loki
In this season, Tom Hiddleston reprised his role as Loki, collaborating with Mobius (Owen Wilson), Ouroboros (Ke Huy Quan), and other Time Variance Authority (TVA) members to restore the Temporal Loom, also known as the sacred timeline. Following the aftermath of the first season, where Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), a variant of Loki, eliminates He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) — the architect of the sacred timeline and the TVA, created to prevent the emergence of his own variants — the loom is now in jeopardy. The branching timelines are causing an imminent catastrophic failure due to an overload of temporal divergence.
During this season the characters try and find a way for the branching timelines to exist simultaneously. As the season unfolds, Loki finds himself repeatedly slipping through time. Seeking guidance, he receives assistance from Ouroboros, spanning both the past and present, on how to halt this temporal instability. The characters soon come to the realization that they require the aid of either Miss Minutes, an anthropomorphic clock voiced by Tara Strong, or He Who Remains. However, one is absent, and the other has met their demise.
After tracking down where Miss Minutes is the characters find a variant of He Who Remains who goes by Victor Timley. Who’s timeline branched because someone gave him the TVA handbook. As Loki and Mobius attempt to confront Timely, Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Miss Minutes also join the scene. However, Sylvie makes an unexpected entrance with the intention of killing Timely, fearing that he may follow in the footsteps of He Who Remains.
While Sylvie, Loki and Mobius are distracted Renslayer manages to get away with with Timely. The two heads to his laboratory on a boat. Where he soon betrays her thanks to Miss Minutes whispering in his ear to do so. Once at his lab Miss Minutes makes Timely uncomfortable so he quickly shuts her off. However not long after Renslayer, Mobius, Loki and Sylvie all arrive. Managing to convince Sylvie not to kill him, Timley leaves with Loki and Mobius. Leaving Renslayer alone with Sylvie who kicks, rensayer through a time door bring her to the citadel at the end of time where she soon learns the truth about the TVA.
After enduring further antics from Renslayer, the team finally makes progress in their mission to fix the loom. Once they dispatch Timely to address the looming issues, everything appears to be on the mend until he is tragically torn apart by extreme temporal radiation. The team gazes in defeat as the loom explodes, leaving weekly viewers in suspense, pondering the fate of everyone involved for the next week.
In the next episode, Loki miraculously survives but finds himself slipping through time again, with none of his teammates recognizing him, except for Sylvie. The two engage in a conversation, during which Sylvie advises Loki against forcefully altering people’s lives. Loki concurs and proceeds to inform the team, comprised of their gathered variants, that they are now free to pursue their own destinies. However, as they disperse, Sylvie’s timeline starts collapsing into strands, resembling spaghetti. In a swift move, she utilizes a tempad to reach Loki urgently, conveying the message that they need to take immediate action.
However, Loki barely gets time to process as the world around him begins getting ripped apart. Suddenly Loki gets control of his time slipping and goes back to timeline being ripped apart. He then goes back to moments before the loom explodes. We then get a Groundhog Day like sequence where Loki tries everything he can to try and make sure the team is successful is fixing the temporal loom.
After traversing through time repeatedly, Loki arrives at various points, encountering He Who Remains. In one of these encounters, he discovers that the only way to address the imminent crisis is to prevent Sylvie from killing He Who Remains. Despite the gravity of the situation, Loki finds himself unable to carry out this directive. Instead, he decides to approach Sylvie in the future, just moments before impending destruction, to reveal the crucial information about the predicament they face.
Once the conversation was done he realized that there is only one way can fix the temporal loom. He goes back again to before the loom explodes saying goodbye to his friends and then walking straight into the loom. Once there he begins grabbing dead timelines and holding them in his hand and they begin to glow green. He then sits himself down on a chair where he will watch overtime for all eternity. Once the camera zooms out we see all the many branches of time which all form a tree like shape. Which has a striking resemblance to the Yggdrasil from norse Mythology.
What does this mean for the future of the MCU? Will Loki return or will he forever watch over time? I guess only time will tell. As the MCU begins expanding into multiversal territory. We have already seen variants of He Who Remains in other Marvel properties such as Ant Man 3. This Variant is known by Kang the Conqueror who was banished by his variants (Council of Kangs) to the Quantum realm. How dangerous will these other variants be? Will the Avengers be able to stop them?
I would love to hear from you!
